❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The standard tip at a restaurant is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. 15% is considered adequate for decent service, 18% is average, and 20% or more is for excellent service. For truly exceptional service, some diners tip 25% or higher. Our tip calculator makes it easy to try different percentages before you decide.
To calculate a 20% tip, multiply your bill total by 0.20. For example, on a $75 bill: $75 × 0.20 = $15 tip. Your total would be $90. A quick mental trick: find 10% (move the decimal left one place), then double it for 20%. For $75: 10% = $7.50, doubled = $15.
Add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. For example, a $100 bill with a 20% tip becomes $120, split among 4 people = $30 each. Our bill split calculator does this automatically — just enter the number of people and it shows the exact per-person amount.
It is generally considered appropriate to tip on the pre-tax amount. However, many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. Both approaches are acceptable — the difference is usually just a small amount. Our calculator uses the bill amount you enter, so you can enter either pre-tax or post-tax depending on your preference.
For takeout, tipping 10% is a kind gesture but not always expected. For delivery, tipping 15–20% of the bill (or a minimum of $3–$5) is considered standard, as the delivery driver incurs travel expenses. You can use our restaurant tip calculator for delivery orders too — just enter the order total and pick a tip percentage.
