❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST and how does it work in India?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India, introduced on July 1, 2017. It replaced a complex system of multiple central and state taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, and CST. GST is a destination-based tax collected at each stage of the supply chain, with the final burden falling on the end consumer. India has four main GST slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, with a 0% category for exempt essential goods.
How do I add GST to an amount?
To add GST to a base amount, use the formula: Total = Base Amount × (1 + GST Rate / 100). For example, to add 18% GST to ₹10,000: Total = ₹10,000 × 1.18 = ₹11,800. The GST amount is ₹1,800 and the total payable is ₹11,800. Simply enter the base amount in our GST calculator, select 18%, and click Calculate to get instant results.
How do I remove (reverse) GST from a price?
To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price (reverse GST calculation), use the formula: Base Amount = Total Amount / (1 + GST Rate / 100). For example, to remove 18% GST from ₹11,800: Base = ₹11,800 / 1.18 = ₹10,000. The GST amount is ₹1,800. Use the "Remove GST" mode in our calculator to perform this automatically.
What is CGST and SGST? How are they different from IGST?
CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) and SGST (State Goods and Services Tax) are levied on intra-state (within the same state) transactions. They are each half of the total GST rate. For example, at 18% GST, CGST = 9% and SGST = 9%. IGST (Integrated GST) is levied on inter-state transactions (between different states) and equals the full GST rate. Our calculator shows the CGST and SGST breakdown for your reference.
Which goods and services fall under each GST slab?
0% GST: Fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, salt, newspapers, books. 5% GST: Household necessities, small restaurants, transport services, life-saving drugs. 12% GST: Processed foods, computers, business class air tickets, mobile phones. 18% GST: Most services (telecom, IT, financial), electronics, restaurants, construction materials. 28% GST: Luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco products, aerated drinks, casinos, betting. Note: These categories may change as the GST council updates rates periodically.
