About the Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator

Gaining the right amount of weight during pregnancy is one of the most important factors in ensuring both maternal and fetal health. Too little weight gain can lead to low birth weight and preterm delivery, while excessive weight gain increases the risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, macrosomia (large baby), and cesarean delivery. Our pregnancy weight gain calculator uses evidence-based guidelines from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to provide personalized recommendations.

The recommended healthy weight gain during pregnancy is based on your pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI). Women who were underweight before pregnancy (BMI under 18.5) generally need to gain the most — 28 to 40 pounds for a single baby. Normal-weight women (BMI 18.5–24.9) should aim for 25–35 pounds. Overweight women (BMI 25–29.9) are advised to gain 15–25 pounds, and obese women (BMI ≥ 30) should gain 11–20 pounds. For twin pregnancies, these ranges are substantially higher across all categories.

Pregnancy weight gain is not linear — most women gain very little in the first trimester (roughly 1–4 lbs), with the majority of weight gained during the second and third trimesters at a rate of approximately 0.5 to 1 pound per week, depending on BMI category. The weight you gain during pregnancy includes the baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, increased blood volume, uterine growth, breast tissue, and maternal fat stores needed for breastfeeding.

This tool is designed for educational and planning purposes. We strongly encourage all pregnant women to work closely with their obstetric care team to create a weight management plan tailored to their individual needs, lifestyle, and medical history. Use the optional weekly tracking feature to monitor your progress and identify whether you are on track with your personalized goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about pregnancy weight gain and how to use this calculator.

Total recommended weight gain depends on your pre-pregnancy BMI. According to IOM guidelines, underweight women should gain 28–40 lbs, normal weight women 25–35 lbs, overweight women 15–25 lbs, and obese women 11–20 lbs. For twin pregnancies, these ranges are higher. Always confirm targets with your healthcare provider.
During the second and third trimesters, most women with a normal pre-pregnancy BMI should gain approximately 0.8–1 lb (0.35–0.45 kg) per week. Underweight women may aim slightly higher, while overweight or obese women should target a lower weekly gain. First-trimester gain is typically minimal, around 1–4 lbs total.
Enter your pre-pregnancy height and weight into the calculator to determine your BMI category — underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. The tool then applies IOM-recommended gestational weight gain ranges for your category and generates a week-by-week target chart so you can monitor healthy progress throughout all three trimesters.
Yes, though first-trimester weight gain is usually small. Most guidelines suggest gaining only 1–4 lbs (0.5–2 kg) in the first 13 weeks. Nausea and food aversions are common and can limit appetite early on. The majority of recommended pregnancy weight gain occurs during the second and third trimesters as the baby grows rapidly.
Excessive gestational weight gain increases the risk of complications including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, cesarean delivery, and postpartum weight retention. Babies born to mothers who gained too much weight may also have a higher risk of childhood obesity. Monitoring your gain with a pregnancy weight tracker helps you stay within the healthy recommended range.
