About This Body Fat Calculator

This calculator uses the US Navy circumference method — one of the most practical body fat estimation techniques that requires only a measuring tape. The formula uses height, waist, neck, and hip (for women) measurements to estimate body fat percentage.

Essential fat is necessary for health — men need at least 2–5% and women need 10–13%. Athletes typically range from 6–24%, while fitness levels range from 14–31%. The ideal body fat percentage varies by age, gender, and fitness goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
For men: Essential fat 2–5%, Athletes 6–13%, Fitness 14–17%, Average 18–24%, Obese 25%+. For women: Essential fat 10–13%, Athletes 14–20%, Fitness 21–24%, Average 25–31%, Obese 32%+.
The US Navy method is accurate within 3–4% of actual body fat for most people. It's less accurate for very muscular or very lean individuals. DEXA scan is the gold standard but requires medical equipment.
For the Navy method, measure your waist at the navel (belly button) level. Keep the tape horizontal, don't suck in your stomach, and measure after exhaling normally. For women, measure at the narrowest part of the waist.
